FAQs

Answering the questions clients often have before getting started.

Does DesignChicks have an in-house architect?

No, DesignChicks is independent. We’ve worked with a number of different architects on various projects, some selected by the builder, some selected by the client, and some brought in by us based on the needs of the specific project. We collaborate with the chosen architect on both the exterior design and the overall layout of the interior space. Our focus is on the creative vision and on turning each client’s unique design goals and functional lifestyle requirements into a cohesive design plan that the chosen builder and trades can execute.

What is DesignChicks accountable for, and what is the architect accountable for?

The architect is accountable for ensuring every element of the conceptual design is structurally sound and meets all local building code requirements and regulations. This includes preparing the final building drawings for permit submission, submitting the permit application, and coordinating directly with engineers and other trades on structural elements such as load-bearing walls, beams, stairs and mechanical runs. Ultimately, the architect is responsible for the overall structure of the home, including walls, windows, doors, ceiling heights and rooflines, and for coordinating with engineers, surveyors and city officials as required.

DesignChicks collaborates with the architect to optimize every inch of the home to meet the needs of the client, from interior layout refinement to furniture placement and sizing, millwork design and other decisions that impact flow and functionality. Depending on the level of service selected, DesignChicks is also accountable for selecting all materials in collaboration with the client, from exterior brick, stone, stucco colours and other exterior details to all interior finishes including wood flooring, metals and materials, countertops, tiles, grout colours, lighting, mirrors and plumbing fixtures. While the architect may suggest overall millwork layout and placement of major appliances, the detailed millwork and cabinetry design, as well as sourcing and execution, is the responsibility of DesignChicks, in addition to the selection of colour palettes, textiles and furniture.

When I purchase a “design only” package, what exactly am I buying?

With design-only services, we design your home and you then hire a builder or contractor to execute the work. Our deliverables include interior drawings, elevations and 3D models, lighting plans, millwork drawings, detailed finish schedules such as tiles and grouts, paint colours and cabinet hardware, and furniture and décor lists.

What if my architect or builder already has an in-house designer?

Many architects also offer interior design services or have in-house designers as part of their team. When this is the case, it’s important to understand what level of design is included. Often, these services are limited to overall layout, interior architecture and general millwork planning. Finer details such as cabinet door profiles, cabinet hardware, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, specific wood stains, whole-home paint colours and other cabinetry details are often left to the client. DesignChicks can support these projects by managing and resolving these details to ensure a cohesive, fully considered result.
